Lighting The Pink Advent Candle
On the third Sunday the pink candle is lit.
Lighting the pink advent candle. You have an evergreen wreath on your dining room table that holds 4 candles- 3 purple and 1 pink or rose colored candle. Each week you add another candle that is being lit until finally all 4 are being lit. The first candle is lit each night along with a short prayer.

In my parish we use three purple candles with a pink candle lit on the Third Sunday of Advent. On the Third Sunday of Advent many churches light a pink candle on the Advent Wreath. Today we light the candle of hope the candle of peace and the pink candle- the candle of joy.
This candle is also known as the Mary candle. Three purple or bluecandles representing penitence and one pink candle representing joy areused one lit for each Sunday of Advent. In so doing the church adopted the first four candles of Lent and changed the third candle of Advent to pink in honor of the Lenten tradition.
The custom of lighting Advent candles is an old one. The pink one is lit on the third week and the Christ Candle is lit on either Christmas Eve or Christmas day and on each Sunday during Christmastide. The lighting tradition On the fourth Sunday before Christmas the first Sunday of Advent the first Advent candle is lit at dinner and a short prayer is said.
