How to calculate lighting for a room. Calculation of how many lights are needed in a room. To calculate the lumens required to light the same room we used in our earlier post just multiply the square feet of the room by the lumens per square foot required for the room type. Once you know how many lumens you need you can start figuring out how many light bulbs will suffice to illuminate your surface. Multiply the area in square meters by the lux or the area in square feet.
